In the ranch with low ceilings, check that a dropped ceiling isn't hiding an 8-foot-high-or-so ceiling, or visually "lift the roof" with floor-to-ceiling drapery.

When a complete kitchen overhaul is not an option, replace old, laminate countertops with recycled glass or granite.

Give your squat space a lift with options as inexpensive as a coat of paint.

If bricks along the bottom half or under the windows of your ranch’s exterior chop it even shorter, update -- and stretch -- the exterior with paint.
